Backpacks: Capacity, Fit and Ventilation Tested

The Right Capacity for Czech Day Hikes

Most Czech day hikes run between 8 and 18 km and require a pack that carries 1.5 L water, a rain layer, lunch, a first-aid kit, and camera gear if you bring it. A 22–28 L pack covers this without excess volume that encourages overpacking. We focused our testing on this range, with one 18 L and one 35 L option for comparison.

Ventilation: Why It Matters Here

Central Bohemia gets humid summers. An August day on the Šumava ridge can reach 32°C with high humidity, and a pack that creates full back contact becomes uncomfortable within 90 minutes. We measured each pack's back panel gap (frame sheet vs. body contact) and the airflow at the lumbar area on a standardised 6 km uphill segment.

Suspended mesh systems like the Osprey trampoline back showed the best performance in these conditions, maintaining a visible airgap under a 10 kg load. Foam back panels compressed significantly under the same load and offered minimal ventilation benefit.

Osprey Hikelite 26 — Score: 8.4/10

The Hikelite 26 is the simplest expression of Osprey's ventilation system. The trampoline back maintained a 4–6 cm gap under a 9 kg test load, and the LightWire frame transfers load to the hipbelt without the frame digging into the lower back on descents. Organisation is minimal — one main compartment, a front pocket, and side mesh bottles slots — which suits most Czech day hikes that do not require complex gear management.

The included rain cover is a genuine advantage on spring Šumava routes where afternoon showers are frequent. At 900 g (empty), it is not the lightest option but provides a better load transfer than packs 200 g lighter. Best for: summer day hikes, warm-weather routes, hikers who run hot.

Note on sizing: Osprey back length sizing runs shorter than competitors. Test the pack with weight in it before purchasing; the shoulder straps should sit flush with no gap at the top, and the hipbelt should rest on the iliac crest, not on the waist.

Deuter Speed Lite 24 — Score: 8.0/10

At 560 g, the Speed Lite 24 is nearly 340 g lighter than the Osprey Hikelite and performs well for shorter routes where load transfer is less critical. The Contact System back puts the pack closer to the body, which sacrifices ventilation but improves stability on technical terrain — relevant for the narrower paths through Kamenice Gorge. Two compression straps on the sides allow the volume to shrink around lighter loads.

The hipbelt is lightly padded and works for packs under 8 kg. Above that, comfort drops off compared to the Osprey. Best for: faster hikes, ultralight setups, routes under 15 km.

Gregory Zulu 30 — Score: 7.9/10

The Zulu 30 targets hikers carrying more gear — a change of clothes, technical layers, full water reserves. The Response A3 suspension adjusts to back length and provides the best load transfer of the packs in our test. For the 35-km Šumava border trail done over two days with a light overnight kit, this was the most comfortable option.

At 1.1 kg and 30 L, it is heavier and larger than most Czech day hikers need. The extra capacity encourages overpacking. Best for: multi-day routes, shoulder-season hikes with bulky layering systems.

Sizing and Fit Essentials

Pack fit depends more on torso length than on overall body height. Measure from the C7 vertebra (the prominent bone at the base of the neck) to the level of the iliac crest. Most manufacturers offer two or three back length options, and choosing correctly avoids the shoulder strap gap and hipbelt positioning errors that cause most back pain complaints.
